The Trust for Heisgeir / Friends of the Schoolhouse was formed in 2004 with the aim of preserving the old Schoolhouse on Ceann Ear and continuing its usefulness to fishermen and grazings.
From 2004 – 2007, ambitious and energetic workparties of local volunteers and tradesmen rescued the old Schoolhouse. In week-long stays – sometimes with as many as 16 people -all windows and the front door were replaced, the schoolhouse roof was stripped and reslated, the Mission Hall and toilet block were repaired and reroofed, stonework was repointed and the interior was renovated whilst maintaining its historic features and graffiti. Ravenous workers were also fed with five meals a day, while hauling water from the loch and planting potatoes.
The videos document these first summers (and a cookbook tells how they did it.)
